The future looked uncertain, and hope seemed far away. Yet even in the midst of hardship, Veronica never gave up.
Once upon a time, Veronica’s daily reality was heart breaking. From dawn till dusk, she washed dishes and scrubbed people’s clothes just to survive.
Yet instead of kindness, she was met with constant insults, ridicule, and disrespect from some members of the Diebene community. Every single day felt like a battle for survival.
But today, Veronica’s story has completely changed.
Thanks to the timely intervention and support of Hands of Gold Foundation, Veronica is now a proud entrepreneur, a confident young woman, and the main breadwinner of her family.
Her journey, however, was far from easy.
After completing Senior High School, Veronica’s dreams of further education came to an abrupt end. Poverty, coupled with the absence of proper parental guidance, led her into an early pregnancy by a man who later neglected both her and their child.
Suddenly, life became painfully difficult.
With a newborn baby to care for and no support system, Veronica had no choice but to take on all kinds of menial jobs just to survive.
She worked tirelessly, enduring humiliation and mockery along the way — all for a meagre GHC5 a day.
Some days, she returned home exhausted with barely enough money to feed herself and her child.
The future looked uncertain, and hope seemed far away.
Yet even in the midst of hardship, Veronica never gave up.
She continued pushing forward, praying that one day her life would change.
That moment finally came in 2024.
Through its women empowerment programme, Hands of Gold Foundation stepped in to rewrite Veronica’s story.
During a community survey visit to Diebene, many residents were reluctant to speak with the team.
However, Veronica warmly welcomed them and openly shared her struggles and dreams.
Touched by her sincerity, resilience, and determination, the team promised they would return.
To Veronica, it sounded too good to be true. Like many promises she had heard before, she feared this one would fade away. But Hands of Gold Foundation kept its word.
On the day the team returned to unveil the life-changing support package prepared for her, Veronica could not hold back her tears.
Overwhelmed with emotion, she cried tears of joy and repeatedly expressed disbelief that someone had finally remembered her.
The foundation provided Veronica with a container shop to begin with a small eatery joint to help her earn a sustainable income.
For the first time in years, Veronica saw a future filled with possibilities instead of pain.
The event quickly attracted attention throughout the community.
Young and old gathered around to witness the moment, praising and blessing Hands of Gold Foundation for bringing hope to someone many had overlooked.
Ironically, the same residents who were initially hesitant to engage with the survey team now eagerly wanted to share their own stories and encouraged the foundation to return and support more struggling families in the community.
Today, Veronica has transformed her small eatery into a community venture where she prepares "shito" a local Ghanaian pepper sauce which has become internationally acclaimed on mini scale for sale.
"I couldn't imagine that a day will come for my life to transform this way. Today members of the community who mocked and treated me with contempt come to buy my shito on wholesale basis and sell in other adjoining communities," Veronica said beaming with smiles.
But the support did not end there.
Veronica’s two-year-old son, Jayden, was enrolled in school, with his school fees, learning materials, feeding, and welfare fully supported by the foundation to ensure he received a comfortable and dignified start in life.
A few days later, Hands of Gold Foundation followed up with Jayden’s school to monitor his progress and adjustment.
The headmaster, Mr. Frank Quaijah, spoke joyfully about the child’s transformation.
According to him, Jayden had adapted very well, enjoyed being in school, and showed signs of great potential.
"Indeed, I commended the foundation for its generosity and appeal passionately for more support to be extended to other vulnerable children in the community," Mr Quaijah said.
Similarly, her auntie who acted also as her grandmother, Madam Cecilia Akroma could not hide her joy over the sudden transformation of her niece.
"This short period has taught me in my old age that with the right support and finances, anyone determined can become somebody.
Initial I thought my niece was just lazy and unserious, but Hands of Gold Foundation has proven me wrong. What she needed was financial and emotional support," she uttered.
Today, Veronica no longer wakes up wondering how she will survive the day.
She wakes up with purpose.
She wakes up with dignity.
She wakes up with hope.
Her story is a powerful reminder that one act of kindness can change the course of an entire family’s future.
It proves that when compassion is matched with action, broken lives can be restored, confidence can be rebuilt, and communities can begin to believe again.
Veronica’s journey is no longer a story of struggle alone.
It is now a story of resilience, transformation, and hope.
